Komen National Capital
Komen National Capital serves the communities within the District of Columbia; Montgomery County and Prince George’s County in Maryland; and Prince William County, Loudoun County, Arlington County, Fairfax County and the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, Manassas, and Manassas Park in Virginia.
The National Capital region (NCR) has one of the highest rates for breast cancer incidence and mortality in the nation. The District of Columbia, specifically, has the highest incidence and mortality rates for breast cancer in the United States, with incidence rates nearly 15 percent higher than the national average, and mortality rates more than 30 percent higher than the national average.

Komen National Capital Community Profile
Working in consultation with local community leaders, Susan G. Komen conducted a quantitative and qualitative assessment and a health systems analysis – called the Community Profile — to better understand the barriers women face in regards to access to and utilization of care. The resulting Community Profile Report was published in 2015 is used to help develop strategies for addressing such barriers and eradicating breast health disparities.
Based on the report’s findings, the following target communities will be prioritized for evidence-based breast cancer interventions over the next several years:
- Alexandria, VA
- Ward 2 in District of Columbia
- Ward 5 in District of Columbia
- Wards 7 and 8 in District of Columbia
